You have three tabs open. Shopify Inbox costs nothing. Gorgias starts at $10 a month. Tidio starts at $24.17. Then you read the fine print on any of them and the number moves.

That gap is the whole problem with picking the best AI chatbot for Shopify right now. The headline price buys you the chat window. The AI that actually answers your customers is metered separately, and the second meter is where small stores get surprised.

Something else changed in June 2026 that most comparison posts have not caught up with. Shopify shipped a real AI agent inside Inbox, not a row of FAQ buttons. That moved the free option from "fine as a placeholder" to genuinely competitive for a store handling a few hundred conversations a month.

This post compares the three on the things that decide your bill: what you pay at 100, 500, and 2,000 conversations a month, what each one can do inside your store beyond answering, how each one hands a conversation over to you, and how long each takes to set up.

I build and run chatbots for Shopify stores for a living, so here is where this lands before you read 2,000 words. For most first-year stores, the free one is the right answer, and the moment to pay for something else arrives later than any vendor will tell you. There is also a fourth option nobody puts in these comparisons, and I will be honest about when it beats all three.

What changed in 2026, and why the free option got serious

Until this year, comparing Shopify Inbox to a paid chatbot was not really a comparison. Inbox gave you a chat widget, a set of canned instant answers, and AI that suggested replies for you to send. A human still had to be there.

That changed on June 17, 2026. In the Spring '26 Edition, Shopify added an AI sales associate to Inbox that lives on your storefront and answers buyer questions, suggests products, and handles order inquiries using your catalog, inventory, and policies. If the shopper is signed in with Shop, it can personalize what it recommends. You control the tone and when a human gets pulled in.

It is opt-in, so nothing switched on behind your back. Per Shopify's own documentation, the agent draws its facts from your product details, store policies, pages, and Knowledge Base, and reports four numbers on the Inbox Overview page: assisted sessions, assisted orders, satisfaction rate, and average response time.

The rollout was not smooth. App Store reviews through late August and early September 2026 describe lost widget styling and a sign-in step that dropped some stores' chat volume to almost nothing. Shopify shipped a fix in late August that lets customers start a chat with just a name and email, or anonymously. The app still costs nothing and sits at 4.6 stars across 5,799 reviews. If you want the longer version, I wrote a full Shopify Inbox review covering what it does and does not do.

The practical effect: the free tier is no longer the obvious loser in a Shopify chatbot comparison. It is now the baseline everything else has to beat.

Three tools, three completely different billing models

You cannot compare these three on price until you understand that they charge for three different things. This is the part that makes side-by-side tables misleading.

Shopify Inbox charges nothing. No conversation cap, no AI meter, no seat fee. It is included with your Shopify subscription. That is the entire pricing model.

Gorgias charges per ticket, then again per AI resolution. The helpdesk ladder runs $10 for 50 tickets, $60 for 300, $360 for 2,000, and $900 for 5,000, with overage at $0.40 a ticket on Starter and Basic and $0.25 on Pro. Annual billing saves up to 17%. On top of that, the AI Agent is available on every plan and billed only when it resolves a conversation. Per Gorgias's own documentation, a conversation the AI fully resolves does not also count as a billable ticket. The per-resolution rate is not published on the pricing page, which means you have to ask for it.

Tidio charges on three meters at once. Billable conversations, Lyro AI conversations, and Flows visitors are quoted separately. A conversation only becomes billable once a human agent replies, so AI-only chats do not count against that pot. Lyro has its own quota.

Diagram of three Shopify chatbot billing models: flat rate, ticket meter, and AI conversation meter

None of this is hidden. It is just spread across three pages and a calculator, which is why so many first-year founders budget for one number and get billed for two. If you want the full breakdown of every line item, I went through what a Shopify chatbot costs to run separately. It is also worth knowing that rule-based and AI chatbots do different jobs, because Tidio bills them as two different products.

What does each one actually cost at 100, 500, and 2,000 conversations?

Here is the same store at three volumes. Assumptions are stated below the table, because every number in a chatbot comparison depends on them.

Conversations per month Shopify Inbox Gorgias Tidio Managed custom build
100 $0 From $30 (Starter plus 50 overage tickets), plus the per-resolution AI fee From $32.50 (free plan plus the Lyro add-on) $99 flat
500 $0 From $140 (Basic plus 200 overage tickets), plus the AI fee $49.17 base plus a Lyro tier above the $32.50 entry, so budget over $82 $99 flat
2,000 $0 $360 on Pro, plus the AI fee Growth scales with volume and is quoted in Tidio's calculator, plus a larger Lyro tier $99 flat

The assumptions. Tidio figures are annual billing, which is roughly 17% below monthly. Gorgias figures are monthly list. Both assume AI handles most chats and you handle the rest, which is what shrinks Tidio's billable count and Gorgias's ticket count. The managed column is my own service at $99 a month after a one-time $599 build, which I include because leaving it out would make this comparison less useful, not more honest.

Two things stand out. First, Tidio is cheaper than Gorgias at low volume and the gap narrows fast once you need a bigger Lyro tier. Second, both paid tools have a number you cannot see from the website. Gorgias will not publish the per-resolution rate. Tidio will not publish Lyro pricing above the entry tier. For a store doing under $200K a year, an unpriced variable in your monthly costs is a real risk, not a detail.

The free column is not a rounding error either. At 2,000 conversations a month, the difference between Inbox and Gorgias Pro is over $4,300 a year before the AI fee.

Can it act, or can it only answer?

This is the question most owners ask three weeks too late. Answering means the bot tells the customer something. Acting means the bot changes something in your store. The gap between those two is where every disappointed chatbot review comes from.

Diagram comparing how far each Shopify chatbot goes from answering to acting on orders
Capability Shopify Inbox Gorgias Tidio (Lyro)
Answers from catalog, policies, and pages Yes, connected automatically Yes Yes, after you upload or scrape your content
Recommends products in chat Yes, personalized for Shop sign-ins Yes Yes, with paid Lyro quota
Shows order status Yes, through Track my order Yes Yes
Cancels, edits, or refunds an order Not documented Marketed as end-to-end resolution; confirm the exact list for your plan Yes, and native Shopify actions start on the Growth plan
Follows up by email after the customer leaves No, the agent cannot send email for you Yes, it is a full helpdesk Yes
Channels beyond your storefront None Email, chat, social, plus Voice and SMS add-ons Email, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp

That "not documented" row matters more than it looks. Shopify's help documentation is specific that when staff handoff is unavailable, the customer receives your sender email address and has to write to you first, because the Inbox agent cannot send email on your behalf. A shopper who closes the tab at 11pm is a shopper you may never hear from again.

On Tidio, the action layer is gated. Native Shopify actions appear on the Growth plan and above, and full action access requires a paid Lyro quota. The free and Starter plans answer. They do not act.

Handoff, channels, and the setup time nobody quotes you

Handoff quality decides whether customers trust the bot. All three do it. They do it differently.

Inbox moves the conversation into your Unassigned folder with the AI's prior context attached, so you are not reading a cold thread. If nobody is available, the customer gets your email address and the ball is in their court. Gorgias is a helpdesk first, so handoff is its native motion: assignment, routing, and unlimited seats from Basic upward, though Starter is capped at three. Tidio sits between the two, with human handoff built into Lyro and a billable-conversation counter that only starts once you reply.

Channels are the clearest split. Inbox works on your storefront and nowhere else, which is a real limitation if half your questions arrive as Instagram DMs. Tidio covers Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and email in one inbox. Gorgias covers email, chat, and social, with Voice and SMS as paid add-ons.

Setup time is the cost nobody quotes. Inbox is the fastest by a wide margin because it reads your catalog and policies without you doing anything; you set a persona, set the guardrails, and rate a few conversations. Tidio needs your FAQ uploaded or your site scraped, plus flow configuration if you want proactive prompts. Gorgias needs rules, macros, views, and a Help Center before the AI has much to work with, and Gorgias suggests most brands go live within 48 hours using self-serve resources.

For a solo founder, budget half a day for Inbox, two days for Tidio, and a week for Gorgias before any of them is answering the way you would.

So which is the best AI chatbot for Shopify, by store stage?

There is no single winner here, which is why "best AI chatbot for Shopify" is the wrong question. The right one is what your store looks like right now.

Under 100 conversations a month

Use Shopify Inbox. It is free, it connects to your store without configuration, and at that volume the paid tools are buying you capability you will not use for months. If a free tool fits, take the free tool. Spend the $60 a month on product photography instead.

100 to 500 conversations a month

Still probably Inbox, with one exception. If a meaningful share of your questions arrive on Instagram or WhatsApp rather than your storefront, Inbox cannot see them, and no amount of tuning fixes that. That is the case for Tidio: the free or Starter plan plus the Lyro add-on, somewhere between $33 and $82 a month.

500 to 2,000 conversations a month

Now it depends on whether support is a job someone holds. If you have hired help and need assignment, routing, macros, and reporting, Gorgias earns its price and unlimited seats above Starter make it cheaper than per-seat helpdesks as the team grows. If it is still you and one part-timer, Tidio does most of the same work for less, and Inbox is worth keeping if you can live inside the storefront.

The fourth option: a bot someone else runs

Self-serve software gives you a platform and hands you the work. A managed build gives you a bot configured for your policies, your edge cases, and your handoff rules, with someone watching the transcripts every month.

Here is the honest math on my $99. The platform costs roughly $15 per store per month, AI credits run $5 to $15, my monitoring time is one to two hours at $30 to $60, and tools and buffer add about $15. That is $65 to $105 in cost, which is a thin margin that only works at volume. I am telling you this because almost nobody in this category will, and because it explains why managed services that charge $300 to $2,000 a month are not simply overcharging. They are pricing in more hands.

A managed build beats all three when your policies are unusual, when a wrong answer costs you real money, or when you genuinely will not do the tuning yourself. It does not beat them when you are pre-revenue, and I will tell you that rather than take the setup fee. If you want the decision framework rather than the sales pitch, I wrote up how to pick a Shopify chatbot without a vendor in the room.

Wrapping up

Three things to take away from this Shopify chatbot comparison.

First, the sticker price is not the price on either paid tool. Gorgias bills your helpdesk and your AI resolutions on separate meters, and does not publish the resolution rate. Tidio bills conversations, AI, and flows on three. Ask for both numbers in writing before you commit to an annual plan, and model your December volume, not your September volume.

Second, the free option is a real contender now in a way it was not in 2025. If you are a first-year founder handling a few hundred storefront conversations a month, Shopify Inbox is very likely the best AI chatbot for Shopify for your store today, and the honest recommendation is to run it for 60 days and read the transcripts before you spend anything.

Third, the decision is not answer quality. All three answer well enough. The decision is whether you need the bot to act on orders, whether your customers are messaging you somewhere other than your storefront, and whether you will actually do the tuning that any of these needs to be good.

The work that is left is yours either way. Whichever tool you pick, someone has to write clear policy pages, keep product details accurate, and read the transcripts often enough to catch what the bot is getting wrong. That is the unglamorous part, and it is the part that decides whether any of this works.

Want someone else to run this?

The Studio Niza chatbot service is $599 setup plus $99 a month. That covers the build, Shopify order lookup, the handoff rules, monitoring, and monthly tuning. No per-conversation fee and no ticket meter.

Frequently asked questions

If you're still unsure after reading these, just send the question.

Is Shopify Inbox good enough for a brand new store? +

For most stores in their first year, yes. It costs nothing, it connects to your catalog and policies automatically, and since the June 2026 update its agent answers product, shipping, returns, and policy questions on its own. It stops being enough when you need it to act on orders, or when your customers message you on Instagram and WhatsApp instead of your storefront.

How much does the Gorgias AI Agent cost per resolved conversation? +

Gorgias says the AI Agent is available on every plan and that you pay only when it resolves a conversation, but the per-resolution rate is not published on the pricing page. Get that number in writing before you sign anything, especially on an annual plan. Your helpdesk plan is billed separately and starts at $10 a month for 50 tickets.

Does Tidio's Lyro AI work on the free plan? +

Every Tidio account gets 50 Lyro conversations, but that pool is a one-off rather than a monthly allowance. Once it runs out, Lyro stops replying until you buy the Lyro AI Agent add-on, which starts at $32.50 a month for 50 conversations. The free plan itself covers 50 billable conversations, and Tidio only counts a conversation as billable once a human agent replies.

How do I estimate my monthly conversation volume before picking a plan? +

Count for two weeks and double it. Add up support emails, storefront chats, and DMs on every channel you actually answer, then double the total. Add another 50% for November and December, because that is exactly when ticket-metered and conversation-metered pricing hurts most.

Can I run two chat widgets on my Shopify store at once? +

You can install both, but you should not leave both visible. Two widgets means two buttons, split conversation history, and customers getting different answers depending on which one they click. Pick one, switch the other one off in the theme editor, and keep it installed only while you are mid-migration.

What happens to my chatbot if I cancel a managed service? +

With most managed chatbot services, including mine, the bot stops working when the subscription ends. The monthly fee covers hosting, monitoring, and ongoing tuning rather than a one-time build you keep. That should be stated plainly in the contract before you pay, so ask for it in writing if it is not there.
